Bathroom wall panels or tiles: choosing a finish
Wall panels and tiles can both form part of an attractive bathroom. The better choice depends on the look you want, the existing walls and the preparation required for the selected system.
Choose the appearance at room scale
A small sample can look quite different across a full shower wall. Consider the scale of a tile or printed pattern, the positions of joints and the transition around windows. Look at samples beside your flooring and furniture. A strong feature finish often works best when the neighbouring surfaces are quieter.
Ask what preparation each system needs
Neither finish should be treated as a way to conceal an unresolved moisture problem or unsuitable substrate. Ask how the existing walls will be assessed and prepared for the chosen products. Follow the relevant manufacturer’s system requirements for installation and wet areas. A surface described as water-resistant is not a substitute for a properly specified complete assembly.
Look closely at corners and fittings
The edges around a shower tray, bath, window and pipe penetrations deserve as much attention as the main wall. Discuss trims, joints and how future maintenance will be carried out. Ask to see the proposed finish of visible edges before ordering. The position of fittings can change where a panel joint or tile cut falls.
Compare cleaning and repair expectations
Panels may reduce the amount of grout to clean, while tiles offer a wide range of sizes and layouts. Both still have junctions that require care. Ask for cleaning guidance for the exact material and find out how a damaged section would be replaced. Keep product details and any suitable spare material where practical. Compare quotes using the full scope rather than assuming either option is always cheaper.
